Dear Colin:

You know what would be even cooler than ALL of that storage... the simple fact that the myth box actually WORKED and i could actually use it to watch some movies or play some video games. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Jared

Wow, that can hold a lot of porn! :)

Anyway, I've got Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop and it's running pretty good. I upgraded from 7.04 and I had some graphics issues during the process (X would not start), but once I got that working it's been pretty good. I think it's running some onboard intel wired/wireless cards which worked out of the box.

Depends how you define "floating loose"... it'll be fine anywhere as long as you don't kick it while it's running, and it doesn't short on anything :) If you happen to have a free 5.25" bay, I highly recommend these suspended drive mounts that Tim taught me about a while back. They're really slick, plus really quiet, and best of all: they cost me all of like $4 at Walgreens :)

Ubuntu is definitely "desktopy", though frankly, I'm a bit upset at the moment- I just downloaded 7.10 and tried to install it on my myth box, but its network stack is broken somehow :( With both a Via-Rhine chipset (integrated on mobo) and a RealTek 8169 (gigabit PCI card) it didn't get a DHCP address :-( so my mythbox is still dead, since I can't install LVM to mount my old file system....

Ah well. When I get home I'll take another crack at it.

Wow you have me beat for the moment. I only have a 300, 400, 500, 500 in my desktop, and no raid. I do have some 180's that now need a new home in my Linux box. To bad my other case has a grand total of two 3 1/4 drive bays.

Think my drive will be safe floating loose in the case? Also do you have any suggestions on a distro to use? I've been using Gentoo the last few years but I'm not sure it's best for a fileserver/sometimes desktop. Ubuntu seems to desktopy and I haven't liked any Redhats since 7.2. There has to be something out there that offers some of Gentoo's flexibilty without all the rest of the hassle. Sabayon perhaps?

Most definitely- I use LVM currently across the existing 4 drives, which came in extremely handy when it was time to replace an aging 80 GB drive a while back, and I've even got a couple of the 160's striped for a bit of a performance boost on some of the data... Should make it a breeze to transition over to the new drives as well: I can keep the same file system and all intact :)

Make sure to use LVM (http://www.gagme.com/greg/linux/raid-lvm.php), so that you can easily add and remove storage - you can also resize logical partitions really easily and decommission old drives
